The Firefighters of today are stronger, faster and smarter than those of years past yet have much less true life experience.  We live in the era of “dot com” Firefighters.  The average new recruit is college educated to some degree with little to no prior knowledge of the Fire Service, much less any actual work experience.  He or she often attends a self paced online fire academy which allows them to receive a Structural Firefighting Certification with as little as two weeks of hands on experience. Rapid growth or retirements within a department often lead to early promotional opportunities.  It is imperative that the promotional examinations be fair and impartial yet produce the absolute best candidate for the position.
